Batmen Sweep Penn, 5-2, 1-0

Musselman, Larson Pitch Brilliantly

By Mike Knobler

The Harvard baseball team's sweep of Penn Saturday at Soldiers Field must have been a gift from Coach Alex Nahigian's fairy godmother.

Nahigian three early-season wishes--for consistent pitching production from the tail end of the lineup and solid performances from his younger players all came true as the batmen notched 5-2 and 1-0 victories.

The triumphs upped Harvard's record to an outstanding 13-2-1 overall, 4-1-1 in Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League play the Quakers dropped to 15-11 overall, 5-7 in the league Yesterday's twinbill between Columbia and Harvard was rained out and will be replayed today at 1 p.m weather permitting

In the opener on Saturday, righthander Bill Larson threw a four hitter and allowed just one earned run as he extended his record to 5-0 and lowered his ERA to 2 15. The Crimson senior attributed his weekend success to Harvard's strong lineup

"The guys are really backing me up." Larson said after the game "It makes you a little relaxed"

Larson had a four-run lead behind him after the first inning, when the Crimson tallied five runs Three of the scores came on a homer by designated hitter Jay McNamara who batting in the seventh spot, blasted one over the right field fence to break the game open. Bruce Weller's leadoff homer, Elliott Rivera's double and Brad Bauer's RBI single had already given Harvard a 2-1 lead.

Hitting Punch

The hitting punch disappeared in the night cap, but if absence didn't matter Sophomore hurler Jett Musselman struck out to while tossing a three hit shutout

Penn's Doug Rinaldi also threw a three-hitter, but one of his seven walks came back to haunt him

McNamara drew the tree pass with one out in the second, and freshman Paul Vallone, hitting ninth, smashed an RBI double, the game's only run

While the Harvard hats slept, the Quaker hats slipped into a coma. Musselman got at least one strikeout per inning and Penn moved just one runner as far as second base.

"Jeff was awesome," said "And I'm very happy with out young kids coming through

This year that's the best I've ever felt Musselman said I play better when it's close

THE NOTEBOOK Musselman's best move of the day wasn't to home plate. The sophomore lefthander fired a strike to first baseman Ed Farrell in the first inning to pick off Quaker Rich Lombardi.
