Harvard Still On Track To Reach Fossil Fuel-Neutral Status by 2026, Sustainability Report Finds
A group of Harvard environmentalists will hold an Earth Day on April 24 to "show our love for mother Earth," as well as host blue-grass bands and speakers, an organizer said this week.
The day-long event, to be held on the lawn between the Science Center and Memorial Hall, is designed "primarily to draw people's attention to environmental issues," according to Kara Ellis '85, co-chairperson of the Phillips Brooks House Environmental Action Committee.
Ellis said speakers will discuss such topics as water pollution, hazardous waste and solar energy, and that tables will be set up where environmental groups can distribute literature.
But Ellis said that "we're trying to keep this a celebration. It's not a political, active-rally kind of day."
The Boston Ethical Action Team will hold a similar but much larger Earth Day April 23 on the Esplanade by the Charles River in Boston, team staffer Deborah Cocoa said yesterday.
Phillips Brooks House will spend $150 for a sound system and advertising for the Harvard Earth Day, Ellis said. WHRB will broadcast the bands, which will play for free.
The Committee, of about 30 volunteers has hosted a series of lectures and symposia on environmental issues this year and is publishing the first issue of a new newsletter this week.
