Students at the University of Maryland have made the most assertive statement to date in the continuing debate at campuses of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) colleges over an upcoming Playboy magazine feature, "Girls of the ACC."
In a 6-2 vote last week, the University of Maryland Student Government Association (SGA) passed a resolution that opposed allowing Playboy representatives on campus to photograph female students. SGA members also demanded a meeting with University of Maryland Chancellor John Salter and the university's Board of Regents to "discuss stopping Playboy from having any affiliation with the university."
"Playboy encourages violence against women, presents women negatively and perpetuates the image of women as powerless and defenseless creatures," the SGA resolution read.
