Spring vacation may represent a brief respite from studies, but it won't mean a break in a rigorous practice and game schedule for members of the men's and women's lacrosse and crew teams and the men's baseball squad.
With funds provided mainly by booster groups, some of these teams plan to travel to place like Florida. Maryland, and Tennessee in search of competition and sunny climes.
Baseball
The baseball team for example leaves for Tampa today and is scheduled to play 10 games in eight days. Their competition includes six minor league professional terms among them farm teams for the Red Sox and Pirates.
Team captain Brad Bauer said yesterday the stint in Florida will serve as both a "season upon itself" and a chance to prepare for the upcoming regular season.
Meanwhile the men's lacrosse teams will stay at home for most of the vacation, journeying out for only one away game at Cornell; home matches are scheduled against Boston College and Pennsylvania.
The women, on the other hand, will be entirely on the road travelling to games at Temple. Pennsylvania, and other schools in the Mid Atlantic area.
The women's heavy weight crew will be on the road as well, working out on the flat, warm waters of the Tennessee River in Oakridge. Tenn. The other crew teams will remain in Cambridge to practice on the Charles.
Funding
Funding for meals for the teams which amounts to about $4000--came from Friends of Harvard Rowers because the Athletic Department will not fund spring break activities men's heavyweight coach Harry Parker said yesterday.
