Measles Vaccinations

Short Takes

Fewer than two dozen students have been vaccinated for measles in the week since University Health services (UHS) officials began urging students to week protection against the illness. UHS Deputy Director Sholem Postel said yesterday.

The UHS warning was prompted by a measles epidemic at Indiana University, where 182 cases have been diagnosed in recent weeks. An Indians spokesman said yesterday that 2000 students at the Bloomington, Ind., university have been vaccinated in the past 10 days.

Postel said, however, that he expects that a warning about measles published in yesterday's Gazette should prompt additional vaccinations, particularly among University employees. Previous notices had appeared in The Crimson and The Independent.

The notices urge anyone born after 1956 who has not had measles already or who has not had a measles vaccination since his first birthday to be vaccinated.

"Presumably, the response rate was so small because most people have met the criteria," Postel said. "Many students must have called home to find out whether they had been vaccinated."
