The proposed Richard M. Nixon presidential library which sparred so much controversy at Duke a year ago, is making headlines once again--the time more than 3,000 miles to the west.

Representatives of the former president and officials at the University of California at Irvine (UCI) have been discussing the possibility of locating the homeless library there.

"History is repeating itself in Irvine," said Jon Wiener, a professor of history at UCI, in reference to events at Duke a year ago.

Last year violent student, faculty, and community protest at Duke forced cancellation of the plans to locate the library there.

According to Wiener, parallels to the Duke scenario include a 10-day decision period for the university and administration heavy-handedness. "The administration is treating the library in the same fashion," he said. The only difference the library has been sealed down from 150,000 to 100,000 square feet. The Chronicle, Duke University
