Men, Women Thinclads Fall at GBCs

Lately there seems to be a lot of competition between Bosten area college teams. But while the hockey squads begin their battle tonight. the Boston University's men's and women's indoor track teams have already earned themselves the bragging rights as Boston's best.

The Terrier track squads both garnered seven first places as the men's team amassed 86 points and the women 83 Friday and Saturday afternoons at the Greater Boston Championships held at the ITT. The Harvard women's and men's teams finished second and third respectively. Despite these some what disappointing finishes, though, both Crimson squads turned out a number of fine individual performances.

While the men finished third for the second straight year they missed taking second place by only two points and missed winning by only nine Last year the Crimson took third 16 point behind the runner up Huskies and 37 behind the champion B.U. squad.

The Crimson came as close as it did thanks to a superlative effort by junky Brad Bunney, some great running by Dway Jones and the dramatic return of Adam Dixon.

Welcome Back

The mile race Saturday afternoon was Dixon's first competition in over a year. His only effort last year came against Army, when he injured his foot and was forced to the sidelines for the remainder of the campaign.

Despite the long layoff, Dixon's renowned, blazing kick does not seem to have suffered After trailing B.Us Mark Kimball and Branders Mark Beeman for seven laps, Dixon took off in the final lap. By the time he crossed the finish line at 4 05 48. Dixon had taken first place almost four seconds ahead of Kimball.

While Bunney's kick might not have been quite as awesome, he repeated his come from behind magic in the half-mile three times Saturday. The first 880 he ran was the individual half-mile race in which he edged Terrier Dave Vona as they rounded the last bend.

With the meet on the line. Harvard Track Director Frank Haggerty called on Bunney again in both the Distance Medley Relay and the two-mile relay. In the Medley, Bunney ran the opening leg and gave the Crimson a lead it never relinquished, while in the two-mile relay he ran the second leg and considerably closed the gap between the Harvard squad and the leading Northeastern troops.

We had a chance to win the team title, Bunney explained after the meet. "So, we did whatever we could."

Senior Dwayne Jones also turned in a fine performance. For the first time in his Harvard career, Jones beat his longtime nemesis. Trevor Garrick from B.U. with a stunning 48.27 performance in the 440. Garrick had led throughout most of the race, but Jones closed as they founded the last turn Neck and neck at the finish line, Jones surged ahead to take the victory.

The Harvard jumping corps had a fine day as Jimmy Johnson and Gus Udo took second and third in the long jump. Udo and Shawn Hall finished second and fourth in the triple jump, and Mark Henry tied for third in the high jump by clearing 6 ft. 8 in.

The high jumping star of the day, however, was Terrier Nick Saunders, who astounded the overflowing fans in the ITT stands by leaping over 7 ft 6 14 inches.

The Terrier women also had quite a successful day, beating the defending champion Crimson squad by over ten points The Crimson women showed the effects of Kate Wiley's absence and the long layoff due to reading period and exams.

What really hurt the Crimson in its bid to retain the Greater Boston title was its futile showing in the relays. The Terriers captured the mile 2 mile and 880 relay races.

But while the Harvard relay teams fell a little short, there were some fine individual performances Sophomore Jenny Stricker easily took the 880 with a time of 2 11 45 while teammate Grace deFries took second. The Crimson duo led from the first crack of the gun and none of the other runners came close.

Kathy Good had just as easy a time in the mile, where she turned in a time of 4 54 98 and beat her nearest competition by over six seconds.

In the shot put, Marie Acacia took first with a loss of 44 ft 8 1 4 in, while Kathy Busby and Signed Gabler edged out Terrier Kinga Kovecses to take the first two places in the 440.

Both Crimson squads will see action this coming weekend when the men host Dartmouth and the women head to Purdue.
