Netmen Win Weekend Tourney; Sands Takes Singles Division

The Harvard men's tennis team has made a habit lately of sending back some impressive results from distant points west. The week before last there were some outstanding individual efforts at a tournament in Los Angeles. And this weekend, it was a team victory over three other college squads, two of them nationally ranked, in Minneapolis.

The Crimson easily dumped the host school, the University of Minnesota, and Arizona (16th in the preseason ratings), and barely squeaked past a powerful Texas team (which placed third at the tourney in L.A.), 27-25. Harvard won three singles divisions and one doubles bracket in the tourney. The Crimson also placed finalists in five of the seven singles matchups.

In the top singles bracket, Crimson senior Harvard Sands knocked off two nationally tanked players. In the semifinal, he survived seven match points for a 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 victory over Arizona's Paul Chamberlain. "It's one of those things that happens so rarely." Sands said of his comeback. "I really started playing well, going for some lines, making some of the best lobs of my life."

In the final, Sands outlasted Texas's Johnny Levine in a three-hour battle, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5.

Singles

Harvard's Dave Beckman walked off with the number-four singles title and Bruce Diker, a Junior playing his first varsity matches of the season, won in the seventh singles division, beating Arizona's Todd Mason in the final, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

The decisive match for the team standings came in the second doubles bracket. In the final. Rob Loud and Warren Grossman rallied to top Texas's Levine and Tom Fontana, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
