Harvard edged out Dartmouth by only one point in both the freshman and JV football games yesterday on Soldiers Field.
Harvard's freshman team edged the Big Green, 21-20. With seven minutes remaining and the Crimson ahead, 21-14, Harvard fumbled on its 40-yard line. Dartmouth's Ernie Torain scored from the one-yard line after an eight-play drive. But place-kicker Danny Freshman choked in the clutch, missing the extra point which would have tied the game.
Harvard scored first in the first quarter, after Bob Joyce recovered a fumble at the Dartmouth 14-yard line. Terry Denson made the two-yard TD ran, followed by Scott Griswold's PAT. Dartmouth struck back with its own seven points with 21 seconds left in the period.
In the third quarter, Harvard back the kickoff back from its own 36, and other 12 plays struck paydirt on a three-yard and by Rufus Jones. Dartmouth rallied in the fourth quarter with a 44-yard touchdown pass from QB Anthony Sellitto to Todd T watchman to close the gap to seven.
Harvard's JV beat Dartmouth, 18-17, showing a tough defense in the fourth quarter. The key blows for the Crimson were a 70-yard Greg Konvelas-to-Richard Heise touchdown pass and a 34-yard fast goal by sophomore. Bob Steinberg with only 58-seconds remaining.
THE NOTEBOOK: The freshman are now 2-0, having previously bested mass's J.V. squad, 34-21. Their next continues is at home against Princeton, 10:30 a.m. next Saturday.
