Giscard and Jerry Falwell May Speak at K-School

Former French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing has tentatively agreed to deliver a major policy address in early May at the Kennedy School of Government. He would also serve as a visiting fellow for three days to the school's Institute of Politics (IOP).

In addition, IOP officials confirmed yesterday that they are considering inviting Moral Majority leader Rev. Jerry Falwell to speak at Harvard this spring, and Falwell said in a telephone interview yesterday that he would accept such an invitation.

"I would very much like to visit more Ivy League schools like Harvard," Falwell, contacted at his Lynchburg. Va church, said. He stressed that he enjoyed his visit to Yale University last May, his first Ivy League speech.

IOP spokesman David Strickland said yesterday that, although no formal invitation has been issued to Falwell, the IOP has initiated discussion with Memorial Church officials to co-sponsor an appearance by the controversial evangelist. The IOP and the church similarly co-sponsored evangelist Billy Graham's three-day campus visit last spring.

According to Strickland. Falwell told his Yale audience last year that "he would relish the idea of coming to Harvard to preach his wayward religion."

Fulwell said he would "use whatever guidelines they suggested on choosing a topic,!" but that he would prefer most to address a Harvard audience on "Fundamentalism in America".

Strickland said, however, that the IOP would not restrict Falwell's choice of topic. Last year Graham chose to discuss the nuclear arms race.

IOP officials stressed that they are uncertain about how Giscard would allocate his time here. but Strickland said his visit is "pencilled in" for May 2 to May 5.

Ordinarily. IOP visiting fellows deliver at one speech in addition to holding informal discussion sessions and dinners with school officials and students.

Waiting for '88

Giscard was elected president in 1974 fellowing the death of incumbent Georges Poinpidou. Running on a center right ticket. He narrowly defeated Sociatist challenger Francors Mitterrand.

Mitterrand unseated Giscard in May 1981. winning the election by less than one percentage point. French political experts believe Giscard will make another run for the presidency when Mitterrand's term ends in 1988.
