James H. Chadbourn, Fessenden Professor of law Emeritus, died of cancer Tuesday in Stillman Infirmary. He was 76 years old.
An authority in the fields of civil processing federal jurisdiction and evidence Chadbourn wrote extensively being best known lot for his revision of John Henry Wigmore's treatise Residence in cases at Comment Law."
At his death Chadbourn had spent 12 years on his revision which explained and provided a theoretical framework for the law as developed by the courts.
Chadbourn first came to Harvard as a visiting professor of law in 1961 was appointed professor of Law in 1963 and in 1969 was named to the Fessenden chair.
When he retired in 1974 students honored chadbourn by dedicating the Law School yearbook to him. He was they wrote, "above all human."
A memorial service will be held in Christ Church (Episcopal) Cambridge at an as yet undetermined date and time.
