Two hours after taking a Chemistry exam in absentia, freshman Dan Watson won the competition in the 10-meter platform event Saturday at the U.S. Indoor Diving Championships in Milwaukee, Wis.
Watson won with a score of 539.99, comfortably ahead of second-place Brian Bungam of Austin, Tex., who had a score of 524.91. Watson also finished third in the one-meter springboard event and third overall, his finish in the top eight qualified him for the U.S. National Team.
Watson's coach, John Walker, said the competition was "fabulous--he had to hit everything." Walker raved about Watson's best dive, a back one-and-a-half somersault with a two-and-one-half twist, calling it a "typical Dan Watson back twister--it was excellent."
Watson, shooting for the 1984 Olympics, will dive in May at an international meet in Pt. Lauderdale, Fla. Walker, who proctored the pre competition Chemistry exam, said the Pt. Lauderdale meet will be during reading period, "so we should have no problem with more tests."
