Red Sox Fall in Home Opener; Late Inning Rally Falls Short, 3-2

The Boston Red Sox made a less than glorious return to Fenway Park, dropping their home opener to the Chicago White Sox for the second straight year.

The White Sox took the 3-2 nailbiter when a Boston ninth-inning rally fell short. Down 3-1 at the beginning of the inning, the Red Sox scored when Rich Gedman knocked in Glenn Hoffman with his second double of the contest.

Pinchrunner Reid Nichols took third on a wild pitch by reliever. Salome Barojas and Boston manager Ralph Houk sent Tony Perez to the plate to pinch hit for Jerry Remy. With the count two and two, Perez grounded out to shortstop Bill Almon to give the White Sox the victory.

Chicago took the lead in the sixth inning, when it finally got to Mike Torrez, who had shut them out for the first five innings. Left fielder Steve Kemp looped a double off the scoreboard to start the inning. He took third on a Greg Luzinski fly ball to center and came home when first baseman Tom Paciorek singled up the middle.

Ex-Red Sox catcher Carlton Fisk, who makes a habit of spoiling Boston home openers, then walloped the ball off the wall in left-center to give Chicago its second run. Fisk undoubtedly enjoys his visits to Fenway Park. Yesterday he went two for three with a walk and an RBI, and in last year's opener he had a three-run homer in the eighth to give the White Sox a 5-3 win.

The Red Sox got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth when Carl Yastrzemski, after being greeted by the 32.555 enthusiastic fans with a standing ovation really gave them something to cheer about with a home run into the right field stands for his second round tripper of the young season and the 428th of his career.

Chicago came right back in the top of the seventh with its third run Almon beat a throw by Carney Lansford for his second hit of the game, and after Leflore took first on a force out and stole second. Tony Bernazard doubled him home.

That was it for Torrez who had pitched 61/3 innings gave up eight hits, walking three and striking out four Reliever Mark Clear came in to retire the rest of the side.

Chicago pitcher Richard Dotson departed after six innings of sparkling pitching. He held the Red Sox to five hits and gave up only one base on balls while striking out five to give him his first win of the '82 campaign

The loss gives Boston a 2-2 record after the Red Sox took two out of three from the Orioles with shutouts by John Tudor and Dennis Eckersley last weekend in Baltimore Chicago's mark now stands at 3-0. They beat the Yankees for their first two wins.
