Beren Keys 5-4 Victory As Netmen Edge Past S.C.

Sparked by captain Adam Beren's victory at first singles. Harvard's men's tennis team made it two straight since springs break with a tight 5-4 win over a highly regarded squad from the University of South Carolina yesterday in Columbia.

The win, which comes on the beels of Sunday's 7-2 demolition of Navy, raises the Crimson's season slate above 500 to 5-4

Beren, a junior, upset South Carolina's Zoran Petkovie, a Yugoslavian DavisCupper, in yesterday's showcase match. After dropping the first set, 5-7, the Harvard captain stormed back to take the next two by identical 6-4 scores.

Southern Comfort

Following the completion of the remaining singles matches, the score stood tied at three apiece, but Harvard iced the victory by garnering wins in the first two doubles contests.

The loss drops South Carolina's record to 20-5. Earlier in the year the team had been ranked as high as 15th nationally but has since dropped out of the top twenty.

Harvard, meanwhile, squares off against the Clemson Tigers today for round two on their southern trip.
