Add another chapter to the ever-expanding volume of the Harvard women's track team's history. The thinclads captured third place in this weekend's Eastern Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women championships, the best finish in Harvard history.
Penn State finished first with 85 points, and Morgan State grabbed second with 68 at the meet held at West Virginia University.
The Crimson tallied 56 points--twice last year's score--mixing outstanding individual performances with the depth the team has shown all year. Twelve of Harvard's 15 competitors scored, and three of them broke the tape for first place.
Moving Up
The three first-place finishes mark a third straight year of Crimson improvement. Two years ago Harvard won only one event, while last year the thinclads took two.
Junior Darlene Beckford and freshman Jenny Stricker teamed to take the top two spots in the 1500 meters. Boxed in early in the tactical race, Stricker had to battle her way into second, finishing less than half a second earlier than the fourth-place runner.
Herlihy Shines
Mary Herlihy became the first Harvard women ever to compete in the 1000, but her results may well encourage others to try it. Herlihy (2:49, 45) raced to a win in what Associate Coach John Babington called "one of the best races she's ever run."
Herlihy, Strickey and Beckford will run the mile in next weekend's national meet at the University of Northern Iowa. Joining them at the meet will be Kate Wiley, who Saturday chopped about three seconds off of her own school record to take the 3000 in 9:31.5.
