Police Blotter

The latest University police statistics, released for the week ending January 16, show that since June 1, there have been no homicides, one rape, no sexual assaults, 22 assaults, 10 robberies, 227 thefts of more than $100 in value, 15 breaking and enterings, and 127 bike thefts reported.

Police estimated the value of property stolen from January 27 to February 4 at $9142.45, including eight wallets, two sleeping bags, and a clarinet.

The following reports of crimes were taken from notes in the University police log last week.

January 29, 9:40 a.m.--The assistant director of the Science Center reported three telephone answering machines, valued at $549, missing from his office. The machines disappeared overnight. Officers found no signs of forced entry.

January 29, 6:40 p.m.--An employee at the Holyoke Center garage told University and Cambridge police that a Black male wearing a ski mask and carrying a .38 caliber reveiver approached the toll booth and demanded money. The employee gave him $100, but the man demanded the blue bag containing the booth's bank deposit of $600. The employee gave the man the bag, and the man fled up the ramp to Holyoke St., turning at the top of the ramp to fire a shot at the booth and take off his mask. He then fled up Mt. Auburn St.

Cambridge police spokesmen said yesterday that officers recovered the ski mask and the bullet. No arrests have been made.

February 2, 12:13 a.m.--Steve R. Messier of West Boylston was arrested for trespassing in Wigglesworth Hall. The 27-year-old man was found standing on the second floor of C-entry.

February 4, 7:05 a.m.--An officer noticed that someone had spray-painted in red and blue letters, "YOUR TAX DOLLARS PAY FOR RAPE AND MURDER IN EL SALVADOR," on the wall of Gutman Library.
