In the first running meet since the NCAA national cross country championships, the Harvard women's track team ran without much preparation and managed to do well anyway, outstanding the University of Connecticut and the University of New Hampshire Saturday at the ITI
Harvard tallied 60 points. UConn 47 1/2 to, and UNH 231/2.
"Dennis [Cochran-Fikes, the Crimson coach] told us to go out and have a good time," sophomore middle distance runner Kathy Goode said
Coming off cross country practice, we really hadn't done much speed work," Goode added But apparently the Crimson didn't need that much to win its season debut
Harvard grabbed first place in several events, and often took second and third in the same races. In the 3000-meter run. Kate Wiley hit the tape in 9.23--a personal best in a Crimson jersey.
With cross country finished. Jenny Stricker is still going strong Stricker grabbed first in the 800-meter dash in 2.12 with teammate Grace deFries close behind at 2.14
The thinclads also took first in both the mile and two-mile relays. UNH challenged the Crimson in the final yards of the mile relay, but anchorwoman Kathy Busby held off her competitor.
Goode garnered first place in the 7500 meters, with Mary Jane Barrett taking third despite a recent stress fracture
"I think we did pretty well," Goode commented. "I think we can win the Ivies."
