The Providence, R. I. city council last night unanimously called for an investigation into Harvard's one of a scholarship fund for Rhode Island students.
The charges of Harvard's possible misuse of the money were raised first by Providence Councilman Thomas W. Pearlman, who said three weeks ago that the University has been keeping scholarship money from Providence students. Last night's vote to examine the fund was widely expected
Revenue from the Charles H. Smith Scholarship fund has gone to the University to provide financial aid to graduates of Providence public schools since 1945, when Harvard wrested legal control of Smith's estate from the city.
"We are not accusing Harvard of anything right now," Pearlman said yesterday "We just want to investigate."
Seamus P. Malin '62, Assistant Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid and administrator of the Smith Fund, yesterday denied any misuse "We have administered the fund along the lines we were asked to," he said
If the council's investigation does find any misuse, the funds might revert back to the city. "The shoe would be on the other foot," Pearlman said
