South House residents were inconvenienced yesterday when water service was disrupted for more than six hours to allow the installation of new sewers in the Quad.
Cambridge officials said the installation project went smoothly, but students in Briggs, Barnard, Beriram and Eliot halls complained that they were not able to use showers and other facilities from 9 a.m. to 3.30 p.m.
"I was right in the middle of the shower with shampoo all over my head when the water just went off." said Elizabeth F. Bennett '85.
Many South House residents said they had not been warned that the water would be shut off.
In accordance with a City council resolution passed last month. Cambridge Water Department officials notified Harvard Wednesday that water would be shut off yesterday. But Harvard officials delayed notifying House residents until early Thursday morning, said Harvard Spokesman Peter Clancey. While efforts were made to find an alternative method of installation.
Yesterday's installation was part of a 51 million project for renovating sewers in the Shepherd and Walker St. area.
City officials said yesterday that while the projects continues water may be shut off again.
