The Harvard women's swim team last night staged a last-minute rally that brought it within four points of victory before the Crimson fell to Boston University, 79-68.
Four of the Crimson's six first-place finishes came in the last five of the meet's 17 events, bringing the aquawomen back from 26-point deficit.
The conflict came down to the last event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, which B.U. took in 3:38:91. The Crimson "A" squad finished at 3:39:87.
The turning point of the meet came in the three-meter diving, where Harvard's Jennifer Goldberg bounced back from a surprising B.U. victory in the one-meter event to take top honors. Teammates Sharon Daly and Missy Karas completed the sweep of the first three places.
Despite the Terriers' dominance--at one point seven in a row--of first place. Harvard's larger team demonstrated more depth and garnered second-and third-place finishes in all but one event.
Back in the Pond
Sophomore Karen DiBlaxio, benched most of last year because of illness, snagged first in the 100-yard frestyle and showed signs of living up to Coach Vicki Hays' prediction of a strong comeback.
DiBlasio said it was "great to feel like I belonged in the water again."
Though a bit disappointed, Calvert called the loss "a good season opener." B.U. was well prepared and "out for revenge," she said, recalling last year's opener, which Harvard won by seven points.
Hays was also unfazed by the result, viewing it as a chance to evaluate the lineups before the later, tougher meets of the season. "We always know B.U. is going to be a close one--we couldn't have had a closer one," Hays said.
THE NOTEBOOK: The "Walker Award" of a loaf of home-baked bread for the team's outstanding performance of the day went to sophomore Mary Rentoumis, who took first in the 100-yard hockstroke.
