Fraternity Suit

ALFRED.N.Y--The mother of an Alfred University student who died during a fraternity initiation in 1978 recently reached an out of-court settlement with the Fraternity and five of its former members.

The country coroner's report said the student. Charles M. Stenzel, had died of an alcohol overdose. His mother, Erleen Stevens, had sought a total of $64 million in compensation. The settlement was reportedly about $50,000.

The university and a faculty member who had been the fraternity's adviser had been named in the original suit but were not involved in the settlement. They had been accused of failing to enforce proper standards of conduct at the off-campus fraternity, a local organization called Klan Alpine, the Chronicle of Higher Education reported this week.

The university has maintained that it has no legal control over how its students behave off campus, a university spokesman said.
