Guatemalan Deaths

GUATEMALA CITY--Fifty Guatemalan villagers who were abducted January 1 by armed men have been found dead at two locations 150 miles west of Guatemala City.

Guatemalan officials said yesterday that the dead were people taken from their homes in an attack on the village of San Francisco El Tablon. The armed band also burned 20 homes to the ground.

Ten other villagers taken in the raid remain missing.

All 50 bodies showed signs of torture and contained bullet wounds, Guatemalan police said.

Approximately 300 Guatemalans die each month in fighting between leftist and rightist political groups, officials estimate.
