CHICAGO, I11.--LeRoy Irvin returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown and Wendell Tyler scored twice on short runs last night to lead the Los Angeles Rams to a 24-7 National Football League victory over the Chicago Bears.
The win raised the Rams' record to 2-2 and dropped the Bears' to 1-3.
Irvin's punt return was the team's first for a touchdown since Dick Bass returned one 90 yards for a score in 1961.
The Rams took charge the first time they got the ball, marching 71 yards under the direction of quarterback Pat Haden for a touchdown. And they never lost control of the contest.
Dominating offensive play and holding the Bears to limited yardage on defense, the Rams scored 24 points before the Bears finally countered with a meaningless touchdown late in the final period.
The Bears averted the shutout by finally showing some offensive strength. Reserve quarterback Mike Phipps--who replaced starter Vince Evans, injured in the first half, and second-stringer Bob Avellini--hit receiver Dave Williams on a 14-yard pass to cap off an 80-yard drive that nevertheless proved far too little, far too late.
The Rams defense limited the Bears to a mere 84 yards in total offense during the first half, and Ram defenders sacked Bear quarterbacks six times during the game.
