Racquetwomen Fall in Tourney; Kaye, Corrigan Notch Honors

The women's squash team did not get a player past the quarterfinals of the main draw, but Laura Kaye and Jackie Corrigan still managed to qualify for All-Ivy status at the Women's Intercollegiate Squash Racquet's Association Championship weekend at Bowdoin.

Playing in the number-two position for Harvard, Kaye lost in the second round of the main draw to sixth-seeded Joan McGuire of Princeton, 14-15, 15-3, 15-14, 15-10.

Once in the second consolation draw, however, the freshman standout did not lose a game until she met Lolly Bates, a senior from Dartmouth in the finals.

Before the match, both players were informed that they were tied for the eighth and final spot on the All-Ivy squad. Kaye fell behind early--losing two of the first three games--before regaining her poise and storming to victory with hard-fought decisions in the fourth and fifth games.

Harvard's number-one player, Jackie Corrigan, advanced to the quarterfinals of the main draw before running into the tournament's first seed, Jane Giammatel of Pine Manor. Giammatel overpowered the Crimson sophomore in three straight, 15-2, 15-11, 15-12.

Corrigan was eliminated in the first round of the seeded consolation by Princeton's Patricia McConnell, but still managed to qualify for one of the eight Ivy spots.

Pleased

Coach Jack Barnaby commended his team--which was rounded out by Courtney Stimpson and Wendy Sonnabend. "I'm very pleased. Considering none of our girls were seeded in the top ten or eleven, to qualify two for the Ivies is really great. We have no stars yet. All we need is experience," he added.

The racquetwomen will need all the experience they can muster this weekend as they face Penn and Princeton to finish off their season. The team is undefeated in dual matches so far--boasting an 8-0 record--but will be a heavy underdog against the Tigers, this year's Howe Cup champions.
