Haggerty School

The Cambridge School Committee voted unofficially last week to keep the Hagerty Elementary School in West Cambridge open, after a meeting with more than 250 parents angered by plans to close the facility.

School Superintendent William Lannon cited declining enrollment and budget cuts necessitated by the passage of Proposition 2 1/2 in support of his recommendation that the school be shut down, but neighborhood residents said the school was an essential part of the neigh borhood.

"If we close this school Cambridge will lose all these kids to private and parochial schools, "Cambridge Mayor Francis H. Duehay '55, who voted to keep the school open, said. "This school is an integral part of the community," he added.
