Salient Debuts

By Mary Humes

Members of the Harvard-Radcliffe Conservative Club yesterday distributed 7500 copies of the first issue of their new newspaper, The Salient, and reiterated their vow not to imitate Dartmouth's controversial right-wing student publication. The Review.

Salient editors described their first issue as "moderate to conservative" in tone, but they encouraged students to submit articles with differing political points of view.

Although The Salient received its initial backing from the same foundation that funded the Dartmouth Review, Conservative Club members said they will avoid the other paper's "sensationalist" editorial policy.

James E. Higgins '83, a salient editor, said, "We are a serious, thoughtful publication and are not just trying to make money." He called the Dartmouth paper a "scandal sheet."

Again

Both newspapers have received funds from the Institute for Educational Affairs, a Washington-based conservative foundation.

The Salient will begin appearing twice a week before the end to the year, Mark A. Sauter '82, the paper's executive editor, said.
