Unbeaten Yale Downs Dartmouth, 24-3

NEW HAVEN, Conn.--Saturday's Yale-Dartmouth game could have been compressed into one seven-minute stretch starting late in the first half and ending halfway through the second without changing the result.

It looked as if the undefeated Bulldogs would be lucky just to get out of the first half alive until an 89-yard drive with 1:29 left turned things around. Running ten plays in a little more than one minute, the Bulldogs scored when quarterback John Rogan hit Chris Grieve for a touchdown with 16 seconds left in the half.

The strong first-half finish followed a see-saw first quarter which had the Elis up by only three. And for most of the second quarter, the Ivy champs looked dismal as the Big Green capitalized on three Yale mistakes to move deep into Bulldog territory.

Dartmouth came up short two of the three times, however, as the tenacious Bulldog defense held them to just one 35-yard field goal by Tim Geibel.

Inspired by their strong close in the first half, Yale came out with a flurrying drive to begin the second half. The Bulldogs scored a second touchdown at 6:02 when Rogan again hit Grieve in the end zone this time on a three-yard play-action pass.

Jim Campbell put the game away eight seconds later when he intercepted a Frank Polsinello pass and ran it back 33 yards for Yale's third touchdown.

After the Eli scoring burst, the game settled down into another see-saw battle around midfield. Dartmouth made no more scoring threats and the Elis seemed content to sit on their 24-3 lead.

In other Ivy action on Saturday, quarterback Bob Holly threw four touchdown passes to lead the Tigers to a 38-30 victory over Penn.

The Lions of Columbia failed to gain a victory in a surprisingly strong performance, when Holy Cross managed to hold them, 14-7.

Cornell downed Bucknell, 22-15, on strong offensive work
