A student security guard was assaulted early yesterday morning in the Science Center when he confronted a group of youths entering the building, police said.

Ashfag Munshi '83 was not seriously injured in the altercation, police said. Munshi was unavailable for comment yesterday.

Saul L. Chafin, chief of University police, gave this account:

On patrol in the Science Center, Munshi approached four white males as they entered the building at 1:34 a.m. and asked them for identification. One of the group exchanged words with Munshi, and then struck him on the head with a beer can.

The youths fled immediately, running toward the Yard.
