Football Player Dies

By Jeffrey E. Seifert, with Wire Dispatches

An 18-year-old Cornell student died Wednesday from injuries sustained during a freshman football game at Dartmouth last Saturday

Enzo Montemurro, a fullback from Rexford, Ontario, stumbled off the field and collapsed during the game and soon lost consciousness. He remained in critical condition at Mary Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover, N.H.

An autopsy revealed the cause of death to be an acute subdural hematoma, or blood clot, resulting from a head injury suffered sometime during the game, Patricia B. Elder, spokesman for the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, said yesterday. A blood clot in the brain usually causes physical collapse within "minutes or hours," she added.

Frank H.T. Rhodes, president of Cornell University, issued a statement expressing the "sense of shock and loss" the school shares with Montemurro's family. The university expects to make a "most suitable" memorial to the football player sometime in the future, David Drinkwater, Dean of Students, said yesterday.
