New Journal To Replace Real Paper

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

If all goes well, the Cambridge news stands this Thursday will see the appearance of a new weekly journal, the Cambridge Express.

Feeling that a vacuum resulted when the Real Paper folded last spring, David Savage and Bradley T. Howe '63--the publishers of the new paper--decided to set up a journal which would focus on Cambridge news, opinion and the arts. Howe said they hope to appeal to the city's young professional population and student communities.

Sensing a good market for in-depth commentary on major Cambridge political issues and the arts, Robert Heroux, editor of the Express, described the weekly as a "literate alternative to the Phoenix." Heroux said, "We intend to take a balanced press approach. We are not going in with any specific bias, but will stress a much more analytical and objective commentary."

Representatives of other Cambridge papers said they are not worried about the effect the debut of the Express will have on their own markets. "It is doubtful that financial support will be there for another Cambridge paper," said David Wiegand, editor of the weekly Cambridge Chronicle.

Kathie K. Min, assistant to the editor of the Boston Phoenix, said, "I don't think the Phoenix views the Express as a threat to either the reading or the advertising market." Min emphasized the difficulty of starting a paper in today's economy, "especially for an alternative weekly. I would be surprised to see it get off the ground."
