Booters Rout B.U. In Seventh Straight

The three women's soccer goalies thoroughly enjoyed their holiday.

The Crimson booters celebrated Columbus Day in fine fashion, trouncing Boston University, 9-0, for their seventh consecutive victory of the season, under the sun yesterday afternoon at the Business School Field.

It was smooth sailing right from the opening kickoff as the Crimson, led by Kelly Landry's hat trick and fellow striker Alicia Carrillo's pair of goals, opened up against the lackluster Terriers in their largest goal production of the season.

Yardling sensation Landry, who now paces the team with 12 goals, had tallied all of her red-lighters and the booters had accelerated to a 4-0 lead just 18 minutes into the game and before starting net-minder Janet Judge had even made a save.

Barb Mahan replaced Judge before she had that privilege but Mahon didn't handle a single B.U. drive in her 20 minutes of playing time, either. Third-string goalie Dana Warren recorded the only Harvard save of the afternoon late in a contest in which the Crimson outshot the Terriers, 24-1.

The Harvard defensive corps, which notched its third shutout of the season, kept its goalkeeper on her toes by not hesitating to pass back to the goalie to allow the squad to regroup.

Dribbling

Coach Bob Scalise has encouraged the backline, which accounted for three goals, to dribble upfield or unleash a drive when open. The fullbacks also frequently pass the ball among themselves to allow the forwards to realign rather than just knocking the ball back into the offensive zone.

Co-captain Cat Ferrante, who tallied a hat trick in last year's 7-0 mauling of B.U., started yesterday's onslaught with her third goal in the last three games. Just 8.24 into the match, Carrillo streaked down the sideline, as Crimson wings would do all afternoon, and launched a crossing pass into the Terrier crease, where Ferrante wasted no time directing the ball into the twines.

Before B.U. had time to remember Ferrante's damage of last year, Landry began her personal onslaught. At 10:15, the Lexington native took a Laura Mayer feed, eluded tow Terrier backs with some mind-boggling footwork, and drilled a bullet into the upper lefthand corner of the goal.

Five minutes later, the 5 ft.-3in. Landry focused on a lofty corner kick from Deb Field and headed the cross past a lounging Marg McClure, the B.U. netminder.

Landry added number three after she and fellow freshman Carrillo gave the Terrier defense a lesson on the give-and-go two minutes later.

Carrilo, who assisted on three tallies yesterday, made the scoring box for the first time since her two goal performance against Bowdoin, and notched one of her own with a 25-yard lob over McClure's outstretched arms to finish out the first half scoring.

THE NOTE BOOK: Ellen "Sprout" Jakovic played effectively yesterday despite a cut over her eye sustained against Boston College which required five stitches. The senior fullback, who finished Thursday night's game with a butterfly bandage, said the stitches would be removed today...The booters have an entire week of practice to polish new moves before they host Dartmouth Saturday morning at Soldiers Field...Soccer fans were somewhat disappointed to miss Virginia Ferrante, Cat's sister and last year's B.U. winger, who took this year off.
