Small Roof Fire Forces Evacuation Of Barnard Hall

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

A small fire on the roof of Barnard Hall at Radcliffe Quad, forced the evacuation of about 100 students this morning at midnight.

Fire officials at the scene said an ignited phone book on the roof of the hall was the cause of the fire that sent flames flickering four or five feet into the air.

There was no significant damage or injuries, and students were allowed to return to their rooms about 20 minutes after the alarm.

Several students were setting off firecrackers in the quad at the stroke of midnight in part of the Quad's midnight "howl celebration" to begin exam period.

University Police at the scene said there were no immediate suspects but added that they would investigate the fire further.
