On the Republican side, as of 1 a.m. Reagan had garnered 85 per cent of the vote in West Virginia, 81 per cent in New Jersey, 83 per cent in South Dakota, 75 per cent in Rhode Island, and 71 per cent in New Mexico. In the Mississippi delegate voting, Reagan won all 22 delegates.

California voters also rejected the contoversial Proposition Nine, a proposal to slice state property taxes by 50 per cent.
