Four hundred runners are scheduled to sprint from the Brattle station Sunday at 10 a.m. to kick off the American Diabetes Association's first annual "Run for Research."
Seventy-five Harvard students are started to compete in the ten-kilometer event, which will start in front of the Harvard Motor Inn and proceed around the perimeter of Cambridge, Jim O'Brian, Harvard Provision Company owner and co-race organizer, said yesterday.
Eva Marcus, New England regional field representative for the American Diabetes Association (ADA) said the ADA plans to make this race an annual event.
"The money will be sent to the main office in New York and earmarked for use in the research program. From there, we have no control over which part of the country the money is allocated," Marcus said. "Close to $200,000 has come back to New England over the past three years," she added.
Seventy prizes and awards have been donated by area merchants.
Pam Stone '82, an official entrant in the race, said yesterday she is competing because "my family has a history of diabetes and the race is good because the money benefits the A.D.A. Besides, you get a free t-shirt."
