Geology Library

The Geological Sciences Library (GSL) will double its size and expand its collection by the beginning of the 1980-81 school year, Julian W. Green, head librarian of the GSL, said Monday.

Located on the fourth floor of the Peabody Museum building, the library will receive all of the Museum of Comparative Zoology's (MCZ) geological materials and rooms adjacent to its present location through an exchange of space between the Geological Sciences and Anthropology Departments.

The 110-year old MCZ and its library will now concentrate on paleontology, the study of past geological periods through fossil remains, Eva S. Jonas, librarian at the museum, said Monday.

The library received many geology materials until the creation of the GSL in 1960, Jonas said.

The MCZ and GSL this year implemented a 13-year-old agreement to consolidate all geology materials in the GSL.

Green said that before the consolidation, "a student looking for materials on geology had to check two places--but now it's all here." Green said the library would add approximately 5000 square feet of floor space and 30,000 volumes, adding that construction should begin in mid-June and be completed by September.

The $100,000 expansion will "add a great deal" to the library, Raymond Siever, chairman of the Geological Sciences department, said yesterday.
