Student Kills Professor in Class

By Compiled FROM College newspapers

BIG RAPIDS, Mich.--A Ferris State College student shot and killed a professor March 26 in front of about 30 students in an accounting class.

The professor, Robert Brauer, reportedly had failed the student on an examination.

Thomas Kakonis, 20 years old and the son of an associate dean at the college, was arraigned the next day and was found incompetent to stand trial. Prosecutors said he would remain at a psychiatric facility until doctors judged him ready to stand trial.

After the shooting, two male students grabbed Kakonis and held him until police arrived. Campus security officers were already on their way, alerted by a student who had seen Kakonis with a gun.

Prosecutors said Kakonis has said nothing since being arrested and doctors said he is in a "near catatonic state."
