Harvard Students To Vote on Divestment From Israel in Inaugural HUA Election Survey
UNITED NATIONS--The U.N. Security Council passed a bill Thursday "strongly deploring an Israeli raid against Palestinian guerillas in Southern Lebanon, staged April 8 in retaliation to a Palestinian attack on a northern Israeli kibbutz.
Six guerrillas died in the Israeli raid, and three Israelis and five Palestinians died in the attack on the kibbutz.
The United States, the Soviet Union and East Germany abstained in the 12-0 vote.
U.S. Ambassador Donald F. McHenry said yesterday the United States intended to veto the resolution, but abstained instead because the wording was changed from "strongly condemns" to "strongly deplores."
McHenry said the measure was an "unbalanced and inadequate response to the problem" which failed to "acknowledge the cross-border terrorism against Israel."
