Committee Urges New Requirements

By Compiled FROM College newspapers

DURHAM, N.C.--A special committee at Duke University has recommended new requirements to give students a broader-understanding of the "intellectual and cultural forces that have shaped their world."

The committee urged that a required year-long course be established on western civilization, although there was some disagreement on the committee over whether priority should be given to Western civilization rather than Eastern.

The committee report also recommended that all students be required to take two general education courses and an English composition course. The general education courses, similar to those at Harvard, may not be in the same area as a student's concentration.

The committee had the authority only to recommend changes and its suggestions will not automatically take effect.
