NEW YORK CITY--Skins brown and spirits buoyant, the Harvard baseball team returned from its annual Florida spring trip with a single win in three outings--a big victory. The Crimson topped Eastern League (Ivy League plus Army and Navy) rival Penn, 4-3, Friday afternoon in Philadelphia to score an important triumph over a highly regarded opponent.
Ron Stewart allowed the Quakers seven hits in collecting a complete game win. Anointed this year's stopper, the senior remained in control throughout, yielding the three runs on a solo home run in the third and a walk, two sacrifices and back-to-back singles in the fifth.
Coach Alex Nahigian, his ample eyebrows pursed sincerely, said of Stewarts two-walk, five-strikeout performance, "He did well challenging the hitters and getting the ball over the plate with something on it."
Stewart's battery-mate, catcher Joe Wark, already well-known as a defensive specialist, began a continuing early-season offensive assault with a one-run blast in the third and a run-scoring, two-out double the next inning.
While under Florida's sunny skies, Harvard dropped a pair of games to Eckert College, encounters that will count on the team's NCAA mark, but not in the more important Eastern League standings.
Freshman Billy Doyle absorbed the loss in the first Eckert match, entering the game in the tenth and allowing Eckert one run and a 4-3 triumph.
In the second, catcher Wark threw out five Eckert baserunners (four would-be base-stealers and one pickoff), but the Floridians coasted to a 6-0 victory at the expense of three Harvard pitchers, including eventual loser Bill Larson.
Current
Earlier, the Boston Red Sox offered Harvard a chance to test itself against professional ballplayers at the Sox' camp in Winter Haven, Fla.
A squad of minor leaguers dealt the Crimson 7-5 and 9-8 defeats in seven-inning contests. In the first, the Sox showcased top pitching prospect Steve Schneck, who performed impressively. Former big-timer Jim Wright, a victim of shoulder trouble, went in the second, and seemed far from recovered from his ills.
Nahigian said he would have preferred more game experience for his freshmanrich charges, but if early season indications continue, for the newcomers--and everybody else--of Harvard's 1980 baseball edition, four games might have been just right.
