Boston University won the seven-team Greater Boston Track Championships at the ITT Saturday, beating Northeastern in the day's final event, the mile relay, to nip the Huskies, 80-78 1/2. Harvard placed third with 60 points.
The win, the Terriers' first in the 21-year history of the meet, denied Northeastern's bid for a fourth consecutive title. Previously, Harvard had won 12 of 15, dating back to 1962.
Several outstanding individual efforts highlighted the two-day affair. The thinclads' Adam Dixon beat distance sensation Rod Garland of Brandeis in the area's fastest college mile this season, turning in a time of 4:04.45 to Garland's 4:05.19.
Not only were both times personal bests, but Dixon's was also a personal first--he had never previously run an intercollegiate mile.
Dixon, who now holds the area's fastest time at every distance from 880 yards to one mile, completed a double by also copping the 1000 with a time of 2:08.81, also the year's best.
Glen Cohen, the British Olympian running for Boston University, broke his own GBC record in the quarter mile, shaving half a second off with a 48.67, while teammates John Wilson, Mike Ferrari, Jeff Smith and Bob Danville won the two-mile, 600, 60-yd. dash and hurdles, respectively.
Crimson tri-captain Thad McNulty captured the 880, after placing fourth in the mile despite a personal best of 4:06.19. McNulty, whose family traveled from Lake Mary, Fla., to see the meet, ran fourth for the first three laps of the four-lap half-mile. As he attempted to make a move with one lap remaining, Northeastern runners James Campbell and David Burke boxed him in and denied him access to the outside.
McNulty made his family's trip worthwhile, however, by breaking free with 40 yards to go, and sprinting home for the win in a time of 1:55.54.
The thinclads fared well in only one other event Saturday, as Peter Nsiah and tri-captain Joe Salvo grabbed second and fourth in the 60-yd. dash.
Other scorers included Chuck Johnson, fourth in the hurdles; David Frim, fifth in the 440; and Eric Schuler, fourth in the two-mile with a personal best time of 9:01.36.

In addition, the Crimson mile relay team of Marc Chapus, Ben Midlo, Frim and Scott Murrer set a school record of 3:17.53, despite a third-place finish.
Coach Bill McCurdy attributed Harvard's disappointing showing to the absence of All-American distance specialist John Murphy and middle-distance man Ryan Lamppa, both sidelined with ailments, and to bad luck in Friday's time trials.
"Had we been able to line up as we might have, this would have been a hell of a meet," McCurdy said, adding, "It would have been three teams right down to the wire."
