Forget about point totals in House competition. The intramural track meet's main purpose is fun for the participants. And last night at the Indoor Track and Tennis Facility, there was plenty of fun.
Quincy's Jack Coggins had to run in a 60-yd. dash heat all by himself. After he finished, the scoreboard flashed, "Coggins, by a nose."
Coggins didn't make the finals in the dashes, but he made up for it later in the mile, placing second with a time of 4:38.9 to Winthrop's Bob Bolen, who broke the tape in 4:33.
Quincy House finished the meet in first place with 99.5 points, edging out Winthrop, which scored 78 points.
Many athletes participated in more than one event, but only a very few came away with more than one win.
Bolen dominated the men's distance events, as he cruised home in 2:28.4 in the 1000-yd. run to go with his victory in the mile.
The two women's distance events also produced only one winner, Nancy Kerrebrock of Winthrop, who came from behind to win the mile in 5:32.5 and took the 1000 in 2:56.4.
The only non-Winthrop double-winner of the night, Sue St. Louis of Leverett, combined a 31-ft. throw in the shotput and a time of 10 seconds in the 60-yd. hurdles for two first-place finishes.
Kirkland's Anne Velie wrapped up two second-place finishes in the meet, finishing after St. Louis in the 60-yd. hurdles and by Barbara Johnson of Leverett in the 60-yd. dash. Johnson crossed the line in eight seconds flat.
