Racquetwomen Top Penn, 6-1

Illness, injury, and the Penn Quakers were not enough to stop the Harvard raquetwomen from recording a 6-1 victory at Hemenway yesterday.

Lisa Harrison, Jackie Corrigan, and Ellie Cunningham, feeling the effects of the flu, played courageously for the Crimson in the second, fourth and sixth positions. Corrigan and Harrison, both freshmen, emerged victorious, while Cunningham, obviously not 100 per cent, lost a tough match in four games.

Harrison, continuing her characteristic hard serving, also used a crafty assortment of shots, including many three-wall boasts, to beat Cinnie Klein, 3-1.

"I didn't feel so well, so I had to rely more on shots than on hard hitting," Harrison said after the match.

Corrigan, despite her illness, played "better than I usually do," defeating Hilary Arrow 3-0, losing only points in the process.

"Among Harvard's healthier players, heroes of last week's Howe Cup Becky Tung and Jenny Stone swept past their opponents, 3-0. Tung topped Cindy Ketterer in the first position while Stone breezed by Ruth Preusel at number five.

Courtney Stimpson downed Quaker Cory Fischer 3-1. Libby Pierpont got the call at number seven and responded admirably with a 3-1 win over Anna Brody.

Harvard's only loss came at number six, where Alison Husting beat Cunningham, 3-1, in a heartbreaker. Down two games to one and 14-4 in the fourth game, Cunningham, refusing to succumb to the flu, fought back to 14-13 before losing the final point.

The Crimson won without Sarah Maleczko, who pulled a hamstring in the Howe Cup, and Wendy Sonnabend and Margo McGlade, both suffering from the flu.

Maleczko will be back Saturday when the Crimson travels to New Haven to face perennial power Yale, who fell to the Crimson in the Howe Cup tournament last week.
