Yale Hires Private Detectives

NEW HAVEN, Conn,--Yale University has hired a private detective agency to investigate whether dining hall workers are doing their work properly, spurring charges of harassment from the employees' union.

"Yale has its own police force and detectives, and they have used them before in cases like this," John Wilhelm, union business manager, said, "so I can't see why they would hire an outside firm unless they are trying to scare our members."

Dining Hall Director Howard Parish said the detectives were hired because campus police do not have the manpower to investigate the workers. Parish added, "When you are handling cash it is advisable to have an outsider come in and look at your operations objectively."

Employee Fined

A dining hall worker in Trumbull College recently was dismissed for the alleged theft of dining hall funds, following an investigation by the Walter J. Smith detective agency in New Haven, Wilhelm said.
