Approximately one-third of the students in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences' first "Introduction to Business" program conducted this summer have already been placed in business jobs, Donna G. Martyn, assistant dean for placement and alumni affairs, said yesterday.
In the face of a shrinking academic job market, GSAS initiated the six-week program to teach Ph.D.'s the "language and jargon of business," Martyn said.
"The certificate you get helps show prospective employers that you've mastered specific business skills," said Kristina Cannon-Bonventre, who received a doctorate in anthropology in 1976.
Many program graduates find business jobs in the field they studies, Martyn said, citing the example of a biology student who now works as a high-level executive of the Botanical Gardens in New York.
Most other students in the program are still job-hunting, although many are assessing offers or close to receiving them, she added.
