Amherst Paper Resumes Publication

By Compiled FROM College newspapers

AMHERST--Publication of the Amherst College student newspaper will resume Monday despite budget cuts that threatened to close the semi-weekly Amherst Student.

A proposed annual operating budget of $15,000 for the newspaper was reduced to $7,000 by the Student Allocation Committee (SAC) on Tuesday. Officers of the Student then said the revised budget was insufficient and suspended publication.

Editors decided to resume publication Wednesday night after negotiations between Student officers and SAC, Alyson Walsh, and SAC member, said. SAC will secure a loan from the Amherst administration to cover past Student debts, thereby enlarging the Student operating budget, Walsh said.

In the negotiations, the paper's officers agreed to eliminate a magazine supplement as a cost-cutting measure.
