Laxmen Burn Dartmouth In Strong Season Finale

By Panos P. Constantinides

The season-that-might-have-been closed on a triumphant note for the men's lacrosse team Saturday as they defeated Ivy League contender Dartmouth, 9-6 in Hanover.

Although Harvard, injury-free at last, won the contest, the victory could only have made Coach Bob Scalise wonder about what his charges might have done in the crucial Princeton game two weeks ago had they been as healthy.

With midfielder Pete Predun leadiing the returning members of the wheel chair corps, Harvard picked up after a slow start, drilling six straight goals in the second half, to take the contest.

With the game tied at the half, 2-2, Dartmouth scored two more goals early in the third period to go up, 4-2, before trying the questionable tactic of freezing the ball for the remainder of the game.

Taking advantage of sloppy passing by the Big Green, the Crimson roared back to take the lead, as Dartmouth lost the little momentum they had. With Predun scoring the tying and go-ahead goals, Harvard left the field at the end of the third period, 5-4.

Three more goals in the fourth period to cap off the six-goal run put the game out of reach, 8-4.

"I'm glad that the season ended on a good note, for those guys that will be leaving," Scalise said, surveying his team's 10-4 record.

Several of the players ended their careers with brilliant performances. Co-captain Ken First (13 saves), and Jamie Egasti (1 assist), Mike Faught (3 goals), Bill Forbush (2 goals, 1 assist), and Gordie Nelson (1 goal, 2 assists), will all be sorely missed next year.
