Wigglesworth to Leave Radcliffe Post

Joined College in 1972

By Brenda A. Russell

Hope W. Wigglesworth, director of the Office of Development and Alumnae Affairs, said yesterday she plans to leave Radcliffe in August.

Wigglesworth, who has held her position for seven years, said her departure has been part of an understanding between myself and President Horner for over a year." President Horner could not be reached for comment yesterday.

Wigglesworth joined Radcliffe in 1972 as head of the Radcliffe College Fund, which received gifts to provide unrestricted funds for the College. Under the 1977 Harvard-Radcliffe Agreement, her office assumed its present title and expanded its responsibilities to include fundraising activities for Radcliffe programs such as the Radcliffe Seminars, the Radcliffe Forum, and the Radcliffe Century Fund.

Wigglesworth said although she has no definite plans for the fall, she felt "it's an appropriate time to leave," adding "It's always good to have new ideas and new people."

Burton I. Wolfman, administrative dean of the College, said yesterday the office will miss Wiggleworth's expertise.

"She's a fine, exceptional and outstanding person," Wolfman said, adding Wigglesworth "will still be a part of the Radcliffe family."

Wigglesworth said one of the most rewarding experiences of her work at Radcliffe, "has been the association with so many wonderful and stimulating people--Radcliffe alumnae and students."

During her term in office, Wigglesworth said the annual gifts from alumnae has risen from approximately $200,000 in 1973 to over $600,000, the Harvard-Radcliffe Parents Association has been instituted, and the reunion program has been strengthened. She added, however, that "I don't take all the personal credit."

Wigglesworth said she does not feel she should leave advice for her successor but said to be a professional fundraiser three things are required--"adaptability, a sense of humor and a total commitment to the value of what you are raising money for, in this case Radcliffe, education, and people working for people."
