100 Sweaty Years Later

With the fate of Title IX still uncertain, Radcliffe is sponsoring two panel discussions and a brunch this weekend as a "Celebration of Women Athletes."

Radcliffe granted $5000 to the women's athletic department to promote women's athletics at Harvard and bring together coaches and athletes, Joe Bertagna, project coordinator said.

Since the grant could not be used to purchase anything under the jurisdiction of the athletic department (e.g. equipment) the coaches of women's sports decided to put the money to educating both the athletes and public on Radcliffe sports.

"We hope to reach outsiders and show off our department," Bertagna, who also coaches the women's hockey team, said.

The largest portion of the grant went to the production of a slide tape that features the 16 varsity women's sports and will be shown at the Sunday brunch.

"The slide tape will be very useful in recruiting," Bertagna said. Participants in this weekend's "Celebration", however, can witness Radcliffe sports in action.

The varsity heavyweights take on Yale in The Race on the Charles River at 11:45 while their freshmen and JV counterparts compete at 10:15 and 11:00, respectively. The lightweight varsity crew races Smith at 12:15 while the JV lights go at it at 9:00.

On Sunday at 11:00 a panel discussion on "Women Athletes in the Media" featuring B.J. Phillips, Time magazine sports editor Vince Doria, Boston Globe sports editor takes place at Cronkhite Graduate Center.

After a break for brunch, professors, physicians and coaches will discuss the "effect of Athletics on the Young Woman."

"We hope this weekend attracts an athlete or two, or even a donation or two," Bertagna said.
