H-Y Split 14 Intramural Matches Yale Sweeps Three Title Games

Yale's intramural tackle football teams won only one game against the Harvard Houses yesterday, but that was the championship match, as Eliot House dropped a 12-7 heartbreaker on a late 22-yard run by the Jonathan Edwards-Branford quarterback.

Harvard won seven and tied two of the fourteen contests played between the intramural champions of the two schools in touch football, soccer, and tackle football, but Yale swept all three championship games.

Harvard took all the other tackle football games going away, outscoring the visitors 75-12 and recording four shutouts in the five remaining games.

Winthrop House dropped the title touch football contest, but Leverett and Kirkland both won their contests. A squad of Harvard freshmen was overrun 40-6 in the fourth touch game.

Winthrop was the only Harvard House to score a goal in the four soccer matches played yesterday, but they lost to Pierson anyway, 2-1. Eliot and Adams were both involved in scoreless ties, while the Lowell booters dropped their first match of the season, 1-0, in the championship tilt.

Eliot fell behind, 6-0, in the second quarter of the championship grid game, but quickly came back. With quarterback Mike Alexander going to the air with three minutes left in the half, Eliot quickly marched upfield.

Running back Dick Manny picked up big chunks of yardage on sideline screen passes, and with thirty seconds remaining in the period, Eliot was on the twenty yard line.

Art Serrano nabbed a hard pass in the end zone for the tying score. Terry Kasbeer kicked the extra point to put Eliot on top 7-6 at the half.

Both offenses stalled in the chill intermittent rain of the third quarter, with much of the period spent deep in Eliot territory. Running back Scotty Guild, who had reinjured a sore ankle on the first offensive play of the game, returned to the lineup to help Eliot work its way out of trouble.

However, the final quarter saw J. E.-Branford mount a sustained drive that ended in the winning score with less than three minutes remaining in the game.

Tailback Doug Rabin rambled for two first-quarter scores and Mather House coasted to a 14-12 win over Morse-Stiles in the battle of the second place squads.

Phil Faust's two conversions proved to be the margin of victory as the visitors struck for two fourth-quarter tallies. After grinding along the ground for one hard-won touchdown, Morse-Stiles picked up a cheap score on the following kick-off. The ball bounced untouched into the end zone, and instead of downing it for the touchback, Mather's players watched as the Yale squad covered for a touchdown.

Kirkland House ground out a 12-0 triumph in the contest for third place, while Leverett and Lowell won easily, 18-0 and 25-0, respectively. Winthrop took sixth place with a 6-0 win.

A Yale goal at the opening of the second half proved to be the only tally as a disorganized Lowell soccer squad met defeat for the first time this season. Although individual players turned in good plays at times; the squad was unable to work as a cohesive unit to mount an attack.

There are three more soccer matches this morning at 10 a. m., involving Quincy, Kirkland, and Dunster.
