Yale Captures Football Crown

By Jeffrey R. Toobin

It came a week earlier than most observers had expected, but in a very unsurprising fashion, Yale clinched undisputed possession of the 1979 Ivy League Football Championship Saturday when its 35-10 victory at Princeton meshed wtih Dartmouth's 24-10 upset of Brown.

The Elis lifted their record to 6-0 in the Ivies, while second-place Brown slipped to 4-2, the same mark as both Princeton and Cornell. All eight Ivy teams have just one game remaining this season.

Senior tailback Ken Hill raced for a 64-yd. touchdown run in the first half to put Yale ahead. Hill's 129 yards rushing and quarterback Dennis Dunn's run for one score and pass for another kept the Bulldogs out of the Tigers' reach.

The Yale title is its fourth in the last six years, but only the second undisputed championship during that time.

A historical note: Yale entered The Game undefeated and untied twice in recent years. In 1974, Harvard took a 21-16 victory and a share of the league title; and in 1968, Harvard "won" The Tie, 29-29, on 16 points in the last 42 seconds.
